Parents and Families

Welcome to the Off-Campus Student Services (OCSS) resource page for parents and families. We understand that supporting your student as they transition to off-campus living can be a significant responsibility. This page provides valuable information to help you guide your student in finding housing, understanding lease requirements, and becoming a responsible renter and neighbor.

Helping Your Student Find Housing

Encourage Independence: It's essential for students to take the lead in their housing search. Encourage them to explore different housing options, contact landlords, and schedule apartment tours. This independence fosters important life skills and ensures they find a place that suits their needs.

Support and Guidance: While your student takes charge, your role is to provide support and guidance. Discuss their preferences, budget, and safety considerations. Share your experiences and offer advice on what to look for in a potential rental property.

Co-Signing a Lease

Understanding the Role: Many students may require a co-signer for their lease due to limited credit history. As a co-signer, you are guaranteeing the lease and assuming financial responsibility if your student cannot meet their obligations.

Evaluate Financial Commitment: Before co-signing, assess the financial commitment and ensure you are comfortable with the potential risks. Discuss the responsibilities with your student to ensure they understand the importance of paying rent and utilities on time.

Being Informed and Educated

Stay Informed: Familiarize yourself with the resources provided by Off-Campus Student Services. This includes understanding the lease terms, renter’s rights and responsibilities, and the local housing market. Utilize the information available on our website and encourage your student to attend our workshops and events.

Monitor Progress: Keep in touch with your student throughout the housing search and rental process. Regular check-ins can help you stay updated on their progress and address any concerns that may arise.

Encouraging Responsibility and Good Neighbor Practices

Discuss Expectations: Have a conversation with your student about being a responsible renter and neighbor. Emphasize the importance of maintaining the property, respecting neighbors, and adhering to community guidelines.

Promote Good Neighbor Behavior: Encourage your student to introduce themselves to neighbors, be mindful of noise levels, and participate in community activities. Being a good neighbor enhances their living experience and builds a positive reputation within the community.
